What's it Worth to You?

Get that antique you've always wonder about appraised tonight.

Do you have some an antique you inherited or bought that has always made you wonder about its worth?

Well you can get that antique appraised tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. and help support two local non-profit organizations in town at the same time.

Eileen Rhoads of Rhoads Auction and Antiques will be on hand at Art Fusion 19464 (formerly Gallery School od Pottstown/Gallery on High) to appraise items brought in.


There is a $15 entrance fee, which includes the appraisal of one item. Appraisals of each additional item is an additional $5 per item, with a maximum of three items per person, so choose carefully.

This is the third time the event has been hosted at Art Fusion, 254 E. High St., and proceeds will benefit the center as well as Forgotten Cats.

Forgotten Cats helps many of the stray and abandoned cats in our neighborhoods. They help the animals receive needed medical care, get them spayed or neutered and find them a forever home.


Formerly The Gallery School of Pottstown, ArtFusion 19464 is a non-profit community art center dedicated to making the arts accessible to everyone.

Its mission is to enrich the lives of the residents in the greater Pottstown area through the visual arts, regardless of ethnicity and economic situations. Their goal is to spark creativity, build self-confidence and develop community bonds through education, mentoring and community service.


Ron and Eileen Rhoads Auction and Antiques can be found at 383 Ben Franklin Highway West, Douglassville, PA 19518. They have fifty years in the business and are the second generation serving the Delaware Valley.

$10,000 Art Scholarship Awarded


A compilation of the work from all 8 scholarship candidates.

The Greater Pottstown Foundation along with the Gallery School of Pottstown awarded a $10,000 scholarship in a ceremony held at the school.

Eight local high school seniors competed to win the scholarship, which is designed to financially assist a qualified applicant in pursuing their further education in the arts. 

The scholarship candidates were:  Georgia Brum, Donna Chu, Trevon Clifford, Raelyn Hedgepeth, Meghan Luna, Lauren Niedelman, Sarah Walsh, Colleen Young. 

Pottstown senior Raelyn Hedgepeth won the close contest and will receive the $10,000 scholarship. 

Trevon Clifford, also a Pottstown senior, was the runner up.

Paul Prince, from the Greater Pottstown Foundation, and Cathy Paretti, from the Gallery School, presented the award.

The scholarship was based on two criteria: A artistic performance as displayed at the Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship Show at the Gallery School of Pottstown, and an essay on why the applicant wanted to continue their education in the arts. 

The applicant's intended field of study had to include a major in an arts related field.

In addition to submitting a completed application form and essay, each student was required to participate in the art exhibit at the Gallery School of Pottstown.

Students created pieces of art from three of four categories:
  • watercolor or pastel; 
  • pencil, charcoal or ink; 
  • oil or acrylic; 
  • sculpture, which included pottery, stone, glass, metal, fiber or wood.
The Gallery School of Pottstown is a 501c3 non-profit community art school and gallery. The School offers day, evening and weekend classes to all ages. 

The goal of these classes is to help students develop their creative skills through self-expression and independence. 

The Gallery on High hosts rotating shows featuring local artists. 

The Gallery also sells handcrafted, one-of-a-kind gift items.

A Window on Local Art Shows

It's going to be hard to turn a corner this month without bumping into some art.

First of all, as The Digital Notebook reported on Feb. 8, the "Re-Creative" show of art made with recycled materials will continue at the Gallery School of Pottstown, 245 E. High St., through April 27.

There will be a reception Saturday, April 14 from 12-3 p.m. and the best in Show prize, sponsored by the BIE Green Team, will be presented 1:30 p.m.

A similar show is gearing up at the Montgomery County Community College, which will state a show from April 9 to 18th called "Eco+Logic" in honor of Earth Day.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to participate in the art contest, showcasing ecologically themed and/or recycled art works, which is open to all media.

The registration deadline is April 4 and the deadline for dropping off art work is April 6.

Meanwhile, the college's West Campus here in Pottstown, will sponsor its Seventh Annual Art Students' Exhibition and Competition, opening April 4 at the West Campus Art Gallery in North Hall, 16 High St., through April 27.


The Art Gallery is located in North Hall, 16 High St.
Approximately 50 students will be displaying their artwork in the show. 


The exhibition includes ceramics, sculptures, oil  painting, water colors, drawings, photography, digital arts and mixed media.

An artists' reception will be held Wednesday, April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. with an awards ceremony at 6 p.m.


The exhibition and reception are free of charge and open to the public. Fine Arts Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
