On Their Honor

Pottstown High School seniors in the National Honor Society were honored prior to graduation.

Blogger's Note: The following was provided by Pottstown High School

Senior members of the Pottstown High School National Honor Society were recognized at the annual awards banquet held in the high school cafeteria. Nineteen senior members of National Honor Society, along with their parents and relatives, were entertained by the flute and clarinet ensembles directed by Nancy Mest.

Pottstown High School Principal Jeffrey Hartmann welcomed the group and provided some words of encouragement to the seniors as they prepared to embark on their next chapter of life.

The dinner was provided by members of the Pottstown High School Culinary Arts Department under the direction of Chef Jacquelyn Mathias.

2014 Valedictorian and NHS alumni  Nicole Grassi, who is presently attending Misericordia University and studying computer science, gave the keynote speech which provided students with helpful hints in preparing for their freshmen year in college.

School Board President Judyth Zahora and Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Sparagana spoke to students praising their achievements and challenging them to prepare for their next level of academic preparation for their adult careers.

Honor Society Sponsor Robert Decker provided some insight about this year’s senior class, which he

described as not only achieving high academic honors but being active in various clubs, activities, and service organizations.

Seniors were involved in a variety of athletics including soccer, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, hockey, track and field with many of them serving as captains of their teams.

They also participated as members and class officers in a variety of co-curricular activities including Key Club, Student Government, InterAct Club, DECA, Trojans for the Cure, Choir, Marching and Concert Bands.
Decker made special note of the fact that many seniors participated in the re-institution of the high school musical, "Grease."

He said that community services and volunteerism were evident by the seniors’ participation in the Pottstown CARES Day, Operation Holiday, Make A Difference Day, Relay for Life, and blood donation drives.

He said, “this year’s class displays characteristics of intelligence, kindness, and leadership which will help to prepare them not only for their college plans but their adult life.”

Senior members will be attending four-year institutions, technical schools, and joining the military.

College plans include Millersville and East Stroudsburg University, York College, Valley Forge Military Academy, Ursinus College, Penn State, Ithaca, University of Sciences, Montgomery County Community College, Susquehanna, Villanova, Eastern, Stockton, and Lebanon Valley.

As is the tradition of the Pottstown High School National Honor Society, sophomore members of the society provided biographical introductions for each of the seniors as they came to the stage to receive recognition. Junior members of the society assisted in the serving of the meals.
