Science, Ethics and Religion at The Hill Nov. 8

Jennifer Wiseman
Jennifer J. Wiseman, Ph.D., Director of the American Academy for the Advancment of Science Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion, will give a free public lecture on “Our Amazing, Inspiring Universe” at The Hill School’s Center For The Arts, 860 Beech Street, at 4 p.m on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Dr. Wiseman, who discovered Comet Wiseman-Skiff in 1987, is Senior Project Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. 

She studies star-forming regions of our galaxy using radio, optical, and infrared telescopes.

Educated at MIT and Harvard, she did further research at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Wiseman also has an interest in public science policy and has served as a Congressional Science
Fellow of the American Physical Society, working with the staff of the Science Committee of the
U.S. House of Representatives. 

Dr. Wiseman is a Fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation, a network of Christians in Science. 

She enjoys giving talks to churches, schools, and campus groups on the excitement of astronomy and scientific discovery. 

Dr. Wiseman will join the Rev. Dr. Carter Lester for the sermon at 10:30 a.m. worship Sunday morning at First Presbyterian Church, 750 N Evans St., and will give a lecture on Monday to The Hill School students and faculty. 

Her visit to Pottstown is co-sponsored by First Presbyterian and the Warner Program Fund of The Hill’s Alumni Chapel.

From Science to Science Fiction and Back Again (Gold Edition)

It's another thrilling installment of (drum roll):

This Saturday in Space Science!

This week has a space theme and we begin with a piece about a very earthly concern -- Gold.

Space Bling

So did you know that all the gold in the earth may come from the stars?

Me neither.

But thanks to Time magazine, I, and now you, know that scientists think all the gold in the universe may be
formed by the collision of neutron stars.

Yup, it all comes from space.
It seems that back in the universe's early days, "there was nothing but hydrogen, helium and lithium. Heavier elements, on up to iron, were forged later by the heat and pressure deep inside stars. 'We are all star stuff,' as Carl Sagan loved to say, in his inimitably geeky way," time science writer Michael Lemonick wrote in his July 18 article.

"Even stars can’t make elements as heavy as gold, however. For that, you need some sort of powerful shockwave, and until now it’s been unclear what could set it off. But a team of Harvard astronomers has come up a possible answer. The gold in our fillings and our jewelry and in Fort Knox may have been created during titanic collisions between neutron stars, the unimaginably dense husks left over after a massive star dies," Time reported.

Evidence for this theory materialized last month when NASA’s orbiting Swift telescope initially spotted a burst of high-energy gamma rays that lasted just two-tenths of a second.
Astronomers quickly trained the twin, Chile-based Magellan telescopes on the spot, and caught a glow of visible light, which let them gauge the distance to whatever had exploded at 3.9 billion light-years from Earth. When they aimed the Hubble at that piece of sky a week later, the light
was still there, but it had faded until it shone only in the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
The light’s characteristics can best be explained, say Berger, by a burst of brand new atoms totaling more than 3,000 times the mass of the Earth. Some are radioactive, which causes the glow. Some are atoms of platinum and lead and other heavy elements. And some, totaling several times the mass of the Moon, are pure gold.
"We estimate that the amount of gold produced and ejected during the merger of the two neutron stars may be as large as 10 moon masses - quite a lot of bling!" lead author Edo Berger, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), said in a statement, published by Space.com. "To paraphrase Carl Sagan, we are all star stuff, and our jewelry is colliding-star stuff."

So next time, you get a golden necklace for Christmas, give proper props to those neutron stars.

'Reality' Science Fiction 


The new science fiction movie "Europa Report" is billed by some admirers as one of the most accurate depictions of human spaceflight ever put on film, and that realism is no accident.

Screenwriters, expert consultants, actors and others worked to bring a sense of reality to "Europa Report," paying meticulous attention to the world they were creating in the spaceship and depicting on the surface of Jupiter's icy moon Europa.

The movie follows the journey of a crew of astronauts sent on the first manned mission to Europa. It is shot documentary-style and features interviews with various people involved in the harrowing undertaking to seek out alien life in the solar system. You can watch the "Europa Report" trailer here.

The filmmakers also added a few hidden gems for fans of space travel. The rocket launch shown at the beginning of the film was footage from the 2011 launch of NASA's Juno spacecraft, expected to arrive at Jupiter in 2016.

"Europa Report" is currently available in the iTunes store and is set for release in theaters on Aug. 2.

Solar to the Max

The European Space Agency/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, captured this image of a gigantic coronal hole hovering over the sun’s north pole on July 18, 2013, at 9:06 a.m. EDT. Coronal holes are dark, low density regions of the sun’s outermost atmosphere, the corona. They contain little solar material, have lower temperatures, and therefore, appear much darker than their surroundings.

Coronal holes are a typical feature on the sun, though they appear at different places and with more frequency at different times of the sun’s activity cycle. The activity cycle is currently ramping up toward what is known as solar maximum, currently predicted for late 2013. During this portion of the cycle, the number of coronal holes decreases. During solar max, the magnetic fields on the sun reverse and new coronal holes appear near the poles with the opposite magnetic alignment. The coronal holes then increase in size and number, extending further from the poles as the sun moves toward solar minimum again. At such times, coronal holes have appeared that are even larger than this one.

The holes are important to our understanding of space weather, as they are the source of a high-speed wind of solar particles that streams off the sun some three times faster than the slower wind elsewhere. While it’s unclear what causes coronal holes, they correlate to areas on the sun where magnetic fields soar up and away, failing to loop back down to the surface, as they do elsewhere.

Rockets and Robots and Math, Oh My!

Have you ever wanted to build a sumo wrestling robot? Now you can, thanks to a program at the Olivet Boys and Girls Club that starts up Thursday.

Have you ever launched a rocket?

Built a sumo wrestling robot?

Did you ever wonder why bridges don't fall down?

Well if you are a high school student in Montgomery County, there is a free program focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics -- or STEM -- available through the Olivet Boys and Girls Club at the Ricketts Community Center that can help you explore all those questions and more.

Professionals from two companies -- Montco WIB and Turner Concepts -- will meet with 15 to 20 students over eight weeks and be mentors helping to explore those subjects.

Open for students ages 14 to 18, the program begins on April 11 and runs through June 22.

Each group will meet for two hours every other Thursday  from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and every fourth Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ricketts Center, 640 Beech St.

The Saturday events will take place at Central Montco Technical High School in Plymouth Meeting.

Subjects covered include aerospace engineering; civil engineering, physics; mechanical engineering and robotics engineering.

Projects include:

  • An egg drop that will showcase fundamental properties of physics; 
  • A rocket project in which students will build model rockets in small teams and compete for best launch and innovation; 
  • A rubber band car project that will enable students to see the mechanical action required to move an object, to understand the difference between potential and kinetic energy and to analyze how a vehicle is affected by motion and stresses; 
A K'Nex Bridge

  • Building bridges using K'nex which will show how varied types of brides support weight and the differences between static and dynamic loads and;
  • Robotics competition in which students will build a robot to compete in the Robot Sumo Competition where two autonomous robots face off on a circular platform in a high-tech version of the ancient Japanese sport of sumo wrestling.
Director Jan Burgess said Tuesday that seats are still available and students can sign up at the center.

Taking a Closer Look at Science

Blogger's Note: Yet more good news about the Pottstown School district, passed along by everyone's favorite "information connoisseur" John Armato.

 A donation of over $10,000 in scientific lab equipment by King of Prussia based ARKEMA Inc. will help make laboratory experiments at Pottstown High School more interesting and educational.

ARKEMA’s senior chemist Anna Johnson was on hand to present students and staff with an assortment of laboratory equipment including compound microscopes, safety glasses, stirring hotplates, scales, and a metal desicator box

Paul Castanzo, Pottstown High School Science Chairman, along with student representatives Logan Pennypacker, Ciera King, and Amiyah Hudson, accepted the equipment on behalf of the school.

“Laboratory experimentation is essential to learning the scientific method. It opens the doors to a wide range of educational opportunities,” noted Castanzo. “We are thrilled to be the recipients of this equipment and as you can see by the student reaction it will be used and appreciated on a daily basis.”

The donation comes by way of partnership with the Foundation for Pottstown Education. 

Executive Director, Dr. Myra Forrest, and Board member, John Armato, represented the Foundation. 

Forrest pointed out, “The Foundation is dedicated to the mission of acquiring much needed resources for the students and staff of the Pottstown schools. Pottstown has eager, talented students and a dedicated staff who will excel in all fields. We want to ensure that they have the supplies and opportunities to show and grow their talents. We are thankful for being able to develop a partnership with ARKEMA that allows us to be able to provide greater resources for our students. Without partnerships such as this, our students and staff would not be able to reach their fullest potentials.”

Along with being a senior chemist, Anna Johnson is a Pottstown resident and has played an active role in the efforts to support improving quality of life issues in our community. 

This past summer, she organized fellow chemists to sponsor a highly successful “Science in the Park” project which involved more than one hundred students taking part in science exploration. 

Anna is also a member of the Foundation for Pottstown Education Board. 

"I believe in playing an active role in my community. Young people are the most valuable resource of any community," she said. "We must make every effort to help them succeed. Learning the basic principles of science can open the door to a wide range of possibilities for our students.”

'Gale Crater I Am in You!!!'

Regular readers of this blog, both of you, will know that I occasionally post information about science discoveries or topics I find to be cool.

Trend-setter that I am, apparently I'm not alone.

I'm not tech-savvy enough to know whether blog posts count as "social media," but according to a New Year's Eve article in The New York Times, science is hot on social media.

Now I take issue with the article's lead-off, which puts Felix Baumgartner’s supersonic, record-breaking jump from a balloon 24 miles above the New Mexico desert in the 'science' category.

I put it more in the 2012 version of Evel Knievel category, but why quibble?

More interesting, to me anyway, is how popular the Mars rover Curiosity's Twitter account has become.

Now I will confess I am one of the hordes which follow these tweets, as much because they have a sense of humor as because of their science value.

"The first Twitter message on Aug. 5 from @MarsCuriosity, NASA’s official rover handle — “Gale Crater I Am in You!!!” — was retweeted more than 72,000 times," the Times reported.

See what I mean? (BTW, this video is really good.)




Less heralded and, sadly, without their own Twitter accounts, the other two rovers on Mars have, Spirit and Opportunity, kept on chugging long after their warranties expired. Spirit finally stopped communicating with Earth in March 2010 and was declared dead a year later. Opportunity is still going strong, exploring clay deposits on the rim of Mars' Endeavour Crater, according to this article in the Huffington Post.

The post reported that "together, the two robots have covered 26.82 miles (43.16 kilometers) to date, with Opportunity racking up the lion's share (22.02 miles, or 35.44 km). While Opportunity is showing some signs of its advanced age, such as an arthritic arm, the rover remains in good health and continues to return interesting data to its handlers back on Earth."

Other hot science news involved the movement of the retired space shuttle Endeavor to its final home in Los Angeles, and James Cameron's "deepest tweet" from the Pacific Ocean's Marianas Trench.

"In an age of despair over math and science acuity, it appears that what was once considered uninteresting or unfathomable has become cool and exciting," reporter Mary Ann Giordano wrote sardonically.

No doubt, the numbers are impressive.

Curiosity's Facebook page is near to a half-million "likes" and its Twitter account hit one million shortly after the August landing.

I don't pretend to understand why this is happening, although my own personal theory is that it has something to with the popularity of the "Big Bang Theory," the "Seinfeld" of the aughts and now running in endless, and hilarious, re-runs on TBS.

If you haven't seen it, it's a comedy about some socially dysfunctional science geniuses who hang out together and try to figure out how to get girls when they are not postulating about string theory.

Despite hitting all the geek stereo-types -- comic books, Star Wars, Star Trek et al -- they still manage to be hip in their own way and occasionally even get the girl.

So I think maybe some people are watching this and thinking "yeah, why not science?"

In any case, its one of the few things in 2013 that gives me hope for our species.

Science is Cool (Or Hot as the Case May Be)

A British newspaper called this "massive filament" eruption on the Sun's surface Aug. 31 "mind-bogglingly gorgeous." We are forced to agree.

I make no attempt to hide the fact that I'm a sucker for science.

I'm not smart enough to be a scientist myself (math-impaired) and I was smart enough to break my mother's heart and abandon my quest to be a marine biologist early in life.

But I am constantly in awe of the things we are now discovering, especially in space. (What else would you expect from a kid who saw the first Star Wars in a theater and was raised on black and white Star Trek re-runs on New York's channel 11, WPIX?)

This week saw a bumper crop of cool science stuff, so because this is my blog, I'm going to share it with you.

1) First up was this post on NPR Wednesday that reported on a video from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. It shows a "massive filament" eruption on the sun that occurred last Friday. (If the embed code works, the video should appear below. If not, you can see it by following the link. You'll dig the super-cool soundtrack too)



My friend Matthew jokes regularly that any problems we may be complaining about at any particular moment pales when compared to the fact that some day, the sun will expand and swallow our planet whole.

So he will probably be disturbed to know "the eruption apparently stretched out a half million miles into space," according to the British newspaper, The Register. Fortunately, NPR wrote, the sun is about 93 million miles from us. And, says NASA, the eruption "did not travel directly toward Earth," though it did give a "glancing blow" to the planet's "magnetic environment" on Monday.

Meet Enceladus, an icy, water-vapor-spewing moon that may be partially responsible for Saturn's rings.

2) Second is an equally cool discovery that some of Saturn's rings may be coming from an icy moon called Enceladus that shoots water vapor into space, probably as the result of gravitational forces.

This "water hose into the sky" was highlighted in this report, also on the NPR site, which reports: "Nobody knew these fountains were there until the Cassini spacecraft flew near enough to Enceladus to find them."

I love their description of the process:
"It turns out this moon, called Enceladus, is a snowball containing what may be a sea of liquid water, warmed by the squishes and stretches of Saturn and other moons that pass nearby (plus it may have a hot, rocky core.) All that gravity pushing and pulling on this little ball squeezes the liquid inside so it shoots up through some fissures at the top."

says this moon is "feeding" water crystals into Saturn's ring.
"Some of that water vapor turns into ice and the crystals fall like snow back onto the moon at a rate of 0.02 inches a year; but some ice is thrown so high, it joins a ring around Saturn, one of the outer rings, labeled 'E.'"
The images above came from Cassini, which sent it back as a batch of digital information — lots of ones and zeroes — which can be turned into black and white images. Working from a series of picture fragments that Cassini transmits in small batches, artist Michael Benson put them together into a single shot, then chose the hues and levels of light based on what is called "true color," what a person would see if he happened on the scene.

Benson has a book called "Planetfall" coming out filled with images like this.

It is discoveries like this that, I would hope, help to justify the existence and continued support of NASA and its work.

Or, as comedian Andy Borowitz recently tweeted (and I paraphrase): "The next time someone asks 'where did spending billions of dollars on NASA ever get us?' the proper answer is: 'Mars.'"

3) Third and squarely back here on Earth, we bring you the tale of Tucker, a truly salty dog.

According to this New York Times article published Saturday, Tucker is "the world’s only working dog, marine biologists say, able to find and track the scent of orca scat, or feces, in open ocean water — up to a mile away, in the smallest of specks."

Tucker does his work off the coast of San Juan Island, off the west coast of Washington.

It is not easy. "Scat can sink or disperse in 30 minutes or less. But it is crucial in monitoring the health of the whales here, an endangered group that is probably among the most studied animal populations in the world."

I liked this bit:
"One thing to get out of the way quickly: orca scat really does not smell that bad. Perhaps because the animals eat mostly Chinook salmon — the tastiest kind, many human seafood lovers agree — the scent is more fish than foul."
All of which only makes Tucker's achievement more remarkable. Now consider that unlike most dogs, he cannot walk to where the scent leads him, he has to somehow signal what he wants to his boat's pilot.
Like a Delphic oracle whose every nuanced expression must be interpreted by acolytes — Tucker might lean to one side of the boat, then another, then suddenly sink back onto his green mat with his head between his paws, the scent lost — his nose for scat leads on, and all must follow.

“The slightest twitch of his ear is important,” said Elizabeth Seely, a trainer who has worked with Tucker for four years at a nonprofit group called the Conservation Canines, which specializes in dog-assisted research on behalf of endangered species. She stood at his side on a recent scat-search session, signaling to Ms. Giles behind the wheel with tiny finger motions — a bit to the right, a bit more to the left, circle back — that Tucker was suggesting by his posture and level of attention.
Million-mile solar flares, icy space snowballs drizzling ice crystals into Saturn's rings, a dog that can smell whale poop; it boggles the mind.

Truly, this universe is an amazing place.

And we are only understanding it one tiny bit at a time.
