Pottstown DECA Club Reveling in Sweet Success

Pottstown High School student members of the DECA Club, learned that hard work can result in a sweet reward. Students took part in the District 8 DECA competition held in King of Prussia at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Twelve team members successfully advanced to the state event held in chocolate-sweet Hershey, PA.

Under the direction of teachers Vickie McShea and Kevin Pascal; students took a 100 question content-based test and completed a situational role play.

During the District 8 event Trojan DECA members matched their skills against teams from The Hill School, Norristown, Northampton, Owen J. Roberts, Pottsgrove, and Spring-Ford. When they travel the sweet road to Hershey for the state competition, they will face representatives from 78 other chapters to vie for state honors.

Pottstown High School DECA Wins Big at Districts

Pottstown High School's DECA team included many champions at the District 8 Annual Competition Dec. 17.

Members of Pottstown High School DECA participated in the 68th Annual District 8 Competition held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in King of Prussia, On Monday, Dec. 17. 

Of the 31 who participated, 12 earned a spot to compete at the State competition to be held in Hershey, Pennsylvania in February.

Pottstown High School teachers Lyndsay Hashem and Kevin Pascal are the DECA team sponsors.

The top six contestants in individual categories and the top four teams in team events moved on to the state competition.

London Aquino

District 8 is quite competitive, with DECA members from The Hill School, Norristown, North Hampton, Owen J. Roberts, Pottsgrove, Spring-Ford and Pottstown competing.   
Destyn Snyder, a senior at PHS, not only earned the highest role play score in the Sports and Entertainment category, he earned First place in the category.  

 London Aquino, a senior earned the highest test score in the Human Resource Management category and placed Fourth in her category.

Pottstown High School's DECA organization recently inducted 20 new members.

Recently, the Pottstown High School DECA organization, an association of marketing students, elected a new slate of officers and inducted 20 new members at a program held in the Pottstown High School cafeteria. 

The evening’s ceremonies were conducted by DECA Advisors Lyndsay Hashem and Kevin Pascal.

Jen Hainsey was re-elected President, serving a second year term. Other officers include Vice President David Hicks, Management Director Emily Weber, Executive Director Devyn Lopez and Competition Prep Director Angelica Calel.

Newly elected Vice President David Hicks encouraged the inductees to take full advantage of the opportunities and activities that are a part of the DECA experience.

Kendra Barkaski, a Pottstown High School graduate and former DECA member, made some brief remarks to the students and family members in attendance regarding the application of skills learned while a member of DECA.

Hashem and Pascal welcomed the newly inducted students and praised the efforts of the Officer Team in organizing the event. 

 “Induction is one of those events during the DECA year that is stressful but our officers rose to the occasion and have made this a memorable event for both inductees and their family members.”

At the conclusion of the event, all in attendance enjoyed some delicious desserts provided by PHS Culinary Arts Teacher Chef Irick and his students.

Pottstown High School Senior Julian Weber is a Leader On the Wing, Under the Sea and in School

Pottstown High School Senior Julian Weber played King Triton in the all-district musical, "The Little Mermaid."

Pottstown High School Senior Julian Weber is a proven leader on land and under the sea.

He recently earned his Eagle Scout Rank after building message boards at Swamp Creek and Pleasant Run Parks. 

A member of National Honor Society with a 4.0 GPA he is also a member of the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow Honor Society. 

Julian also recently earned the Boy Scout's highest rank, Eagle.

Julian has plenty to keep him busy outside of the classroom. His school activities include Senior Art Director for Yearbook, morning announcements, playing the Trombone in the marching and jazz bands-along with piano/ keyboard in the concert band. 

Last year he was one of the leads in the high school Musical -Little Shop of Horrors. 

His peers recognize his leadership skill and elected him Vice President of both DECA and marching band. 

As a member of the DECA Marketing Team he has earned awards at the district competition three years in a row. 

Julian's artistic leadership is seen in his duties as producer for the recording studio and-prop design for the musical. He is no stranger to community service with a long list of activities that include, youth deacon, church work camp Mission to Baltimore Interfaith Outreach, Crop Walk, Flag Day services, community meals, Relay for Life, Operation Backpack, and volunteer support of the Pottstown GoFourth Festival.

He does all of this and more while earning money for college with a part-time job. 

If his talent and leadership on land was not enough reason for us all to say Proud to be from Pottstown, he also rules the underwater world as King Triton in this year's All District Musical, "The Little Mermaid."

The evening’s ceremonies were conducted by DECA Advisors Kevin Pascal and Lyndsay Hashem.

Executive Director Dennis Morales, and Management Director Emmanuel Toussaint. Newly elected President Jen Hainsey encouraged the inductees to take full advantage of the opportunities and activities that are a part of the DECA experience. 

The newly elected officers conducted the induction ceremony where 32 new members joined the ranks of the organization.

Victoria McShea, a Pottstown High School graduate and former DECA member, made some brief remarks to the students and family members in attendance.

“Students who participate in DECA learn specific career technical skills, communication skills, human relations, and employability skills that will be valuable for the rest of their lives.”

Emmanuel Toussaint led the group in the pledging of the DECA Creed and said, “I am proud to have you join DECA and look forward to an exciting year of district, regional, and state competitions.”

Julian Weber provided a PowerPoint presentation highlighting all of the activities that DECA students participated in during the previous year.

Pascal and Hashem welcomed the newly inducted students and praised the efforts of the Executive Team in organizing the event.

Pottstown Students Get Business Skills on DEC-A

All the Pottstown High School students who competed in the recent DECA conference.

Under the direction of marketing teacher Kevin Pascal, and Co-Advisor Anita Santangelo, 42  students who are members of DECA (an association of marketing students) at Pottstown High School participated in the 66th  Annual District 8 Career Development Conference in King of Prussia last month.

Of those, 24 students will be competing at the DECA state conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania.  The competition involved students taking a 100 question content based test and situational role play.  

And here are the 24 winners from Pottstown

The top six contestants in individual categories and the top four teams in team events move on to the state competition held in Hershey, Pennsylvania.  Students’ role playing is judged on how well they adjust to the various business situations that are presented to them.
