People Jumped in the River, So it is 'Officially' 2020

Photos and Video by Evan Brandt

Pottstown Polar Bear Plungers test the waters of the Schuylkill River on New Year's Day.

So I wasn't working New Year's Day, but I just can't resist the temptation of covering Pottstown's signature spectacle, so I headed down to Riverfront Park anyway.

And spectacle it was ...

I won't re-produce The Mercury coverage here. Mercury stalwart Marian Dennis did a fine job and you can read her report and see some of her photos here at this link.

But because she may not know the area's elected officials on site as I do, I will post this additional coverage dedicated to those elected officials who go .... er ... swim the extra mile to support their town.

The first one I saw was state Rep. Joe Ciresi, D-146th Dist., who seemed to be having second thoughts about the wisdom of the enterprise.

State Rep. Joe Ciresi, D-146th Dist., ponders the wisdom of jumping into the Schuylkill River.

Pottstown Councilwoman Trenita Lindsay seemed about ready to push Montgomery County Commissioners co-chair Ken Lawrence into the river herself.

But in they went.

Pottstown Borough Councilman Don Lebedynsky, wore a tutu for the second straight Polar Bear Plunge.

Photo stolen from Luke Johnson's Facebook page.

Newly elected Pottstown School Board member Laura Johnson and fellow school board member Raymond Rose both took the plunge Wednesday.

Photo pinched from Trenita Lindsay's Facebook page.

From left, Area Democratic leader Marlene Armato, Pottstown School Board Laura Johnson, newly elected Pottstown Councilwoman Lisa Vanni, Montgomery County Commissioner Ken Larence, Pottstown Council President Dan Weand, state Rep. Joe Ciresi, Pottstown Councilman Don Lebedynsky, Pottstown Councilwoman Trenita Lindsay and Pottstown Mayor Stephanie Henrick.

Happy New Year to all!
